The True Self

The two Benedictas were seemingly at an impasse as they floated through the woods. The forest was now covered by natural darkness once again. They could still see Alice struggling to keep the portal to the mirror dimension open. They had been debating for hours at this point.

"Look as tempting as it is to want to turn Sybil into some kind of bee monster; it'll only make things worse." One Benedicta got onto her knees as she said that. "Oh God, am I as terrible as Dr.Worm?"

"Well, considering you haven't erased anyone's memory and actually care about other people. I would say no." The other Benedicta shook her head as she spoke. "Why do you want to be human again? Look at the damage they've caused to the world. Look I don't want to kill either but they need to be stopped at least.

"I just want to be able to live a normal life sometimes. I want to go on a hike in the woods without being hunted or mistaken for some cryptid. I know humans created this mess but we're also the only ones who can fix it." Benedicta floated towards her other self as she looked her in the eyes. "So what were you trying to accomplish?"

"I want to make a safe place for animals without having to worry about being hunted by humans. Didn't you want to become a veterinarian?" She reminded her other self. Besides, are you really going to let Sybil rule over the Bay Area? She still has her mirror and part of our soul." She turned away from the other Benedicta, still not content.

"Yes, but that also involves putting animals out of their misery. Can you bring yourself to do that? I'm not too worried about..." She suddenly stopped speaking as her body started to flicker in and out of existence.

"We're running out of time, guess I overdid it." The two Benedictas could only watch as both of them started to fade.

"Dammit, I guess I have no choice but to forgive you. I'm not fully happy about it but I guess most people have some insecurity about themselves. So are we Benescura now or what?" The pair was slowly being reduced to voices at this point.

"No, we're two halves of the same person. Equals. We have to accept each other's actions." The human and the al-mir'aj girl embraced each other before vanishing together along with the portal to the mirror dimension.

Memories started to rush into Benedicta's head like one long nightmare. She knew what it felt like to be born and be completely helpless at Sybil's mercy. Now she knew why Scura hated her so much. She tried to scream but couldn't. All she could do was open her eyes to find herself on an unfamiliar sofa.

Who am I?
