Starting Over

24 hours had passed since 2B detonated herself to deal with the rampaging Erebus model Eudaemon on the world of Halcyon Remnant. 24 hours for YoRHa to reconstruct her body in the Bunker orbiting Earth, and 24 hours for 9S to think about some of the things he had learned.
While it was touching that the Battle unit had decided to sacrifice herself to protect him and the humans, there were some worrying, lingering thoughts of doubt swirling in the Scanner unit's head ever since Edward Elric had handed him 2B's sword.
Silently, 9S stared at the ornate white katana laid on his lap, ruminating over what he had learned.
Though he had uploaded all of 2B's memories to the Bunker prior to her detonation, there was a lingering remnant. YoRHa Androids tend to store key memories inside their weapons, and no sooner had Elric handed him the blade, 9S was hit with the full force of one of 2B's memories, and ever since, he had done nothing but go over the data again and again.

From this day forward you will no longer be designated as...

You will be designated as 2B for the remainder of your assignment.

He repeated YoRHa commander's words over and over in his head trying to piece the fragmented data together, as he hacked his way through YoRHa data systems checking the registry of every unit constructed. Just as the door opened behind him, a familiar silhouette casting over his shoulder.
    "2B you're ba...ck..."
"You touched my sword, didn't you." It's not framed as a question as the Android steps in and shuts the door behind her, expression set into an unreadable stone mask.
"W-well yeah you'll need it back right?"
"You shouldn't have done that." She says tersely, voice edging into a cold, angry, hiss.
9S feels a sense of incomprehensible dread rushing over him as the Battle unit looms over him.
"... 2B, what did the commander intend by changing your designation... You're 2B right? You've... Always been 2B, right? ... Right?"
The silence is more than an answer as the Scanner unit's eyes widen behind his black visor.
"But you're not, are you." He realizes, throat twitching in a fearful gulp. "And now..."
"And now you know too much." 2E replies, resigned. "You know what I have to do now."
    "W-wait a minute, 2B, you wouldn't- you could--erghk!"
9S's consciousness and his groundbreaking realization slipped away with it in mere moments after the Executioner fulfilled her duty by tightly wrapping her fingers around his throat and squeezing tightly until the Scanner stopped moving.
A single drop of moisture rolled from the killer's eye and splattered quietly on her dead quarry's cheek.
"That's 49 times now..." She murmurs gently, setting the body down and calling YoRHa command at the Bunker for a retrieval.
"Why can't you just leave things, be?" She whispered. "Why does it always have to end this way...?"
