Liminality

Syd hated that he had to rely on a peer for something so important. He paced impatiently across the yellowing grass of the new world as the other Exalt worked on the summoning. Despite all the knowledge Syd had accumulated over his short tenure as a Solar Exalted, summoning spirits wasn't one of them. The Solar Deliberative had thought it more important that he be initiated and trained in battlefield sorcery. Instead, that job fell to the Eclipse caste droning on, for the Crowned Suns were diplomats and oath-binders. The co-centric circles of that caste flickered on the other Exalt's forehead alongside the ghostly white aura emanating from them.
Syd sighed and realized it was probably better that a Caste that symbolized the liminal and convergent was summoning this particular spirit. The god of those peculiar five days of the year when the barriers between the realm of the unseen spirits and the mortal realm were weakest. Calibration also marked the end of one year and the beginning of the next; the time between.
Syd reflected that this could go very wrong, for they were summoning Five Day's Darkness; the Sun's Shadow, god of Calibration. Nobody knew if the Unconquered Sun's terrible transformation into the Tyrant Sun had affected his younger twin. He shivered as he suddenly realized how incredibly dangerous summoning a spirit from the Spiral to this nascent worldlet was. What if the Primordials and their ravening hordes followed the trail here?
    *WHO HAS SUMMONED ME?*
It was a demand that hung heavy in the air. The other Solar exalt was on the ground, head bowed so low they could kiss the dying grass, softly murmuring the words to keep the powerful spirit from shattering the summoning circle. Syd saw an imposing four-armed figure that loomed over him and the other, visible only as a silhouette blacker than any stretch of the limitless void Syd had seen. Five Day's Darkness somehow radiated darkness in the same way his sibling radiated sunlight.
"I am Syd Fortis, Chosen of the Unconquered Sun, Junior Member of the Solar Deliberative of Gunstar Autochthonia, Engineer of the Scarlet Empress, Adept of the Terrestrial Circle."
    *WHY HAVE I BEEN SUMMONED?*
"This new world needs a Daystar, Shadow of the Sun. We would honor you with the position, if you choose to accept." Five Day's Darkness stared ominously at Syd for what felt like eternity, expression unreadable for the utter blackness.
*I DEMAND A PANOPLY WORTHY OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN, THAT I MAY BATTLE THE TYRANT SUN WHEN HE COMES FOR THIS WORLD.*
Syd's blood ran cold. "Does he already know of this place?"
*HE IS AS INEVITABLE AS HIS SIRE AND MASTER. HE WILL COME.*
Syd nodded. "Then I guess we'd better get started. I accept your terms, oh Midnight Sun."
