Overview
Bordered by the impassable Hunterhorn Mountains to the west, the Amaranthine Ocean to the east, the Boeric Ocean and the Par Vollen region to the north, and the Korcari Wilds to the south, Thedas is actually only a continent on this unnamed world. However, that continent is the site of all currently-known civilization. The Waking Sea splits the continent in almost-half, with Nevarra to the north of the sea and Tevinter bother of Nevarra, and Ferelden to the south. The area not split by the Waking Sea, just to the east of the Hunterhorn Mountains, is the country of Orlais.
The world is populated by humans, elves, dwarves, and a race of people from outside Thedas known as Qunari. Humans are of course the most populous, and can be found over most of the continent. In general, elves are seens as a lesser race, being little different from humans aside from being smaller, slimmer, and having pointed ears. But do not let the defeated, put-upon nature of the City Elves blind you. For out in the wilds, always moving, are the Dalish Elves, a people dedicated to reclaiming the secrets of the elves, lost when the humans destroyed their culture.
The dwarven thaigs once stretched across the whole of Thedas, but Orzammar -- deep under the Frostback Mountains which separate Orlais from Ferelden in the south -- is one of the few remaining dwarven kingdoms that was not destroyed by the incursions of darkspawn from deep underground. These days most dwarves keep to themselves, except for those casteless surface dwarves who generally serve as merchants (and sometimes spies) to make a living. And the Qunari are a mysterious people, hailing from far north of the Boeric Ocean. Built much larger and more muscular than humans, their two most prominent traits are their large horns and their utter fanatic devotion to the Qun, a set of religious precepts that governs nearly every aspect of their lives.
Excepting outside powers, the three nations of Orlais, Ferelden, and Tevinter have enjoyed an uneasy peace since Ferelden finally ousted Orlais's rulers from their country. Tevinter has had enough of its own problems and hasn't had much time to spare in trying to take over any other country.
One of the biggest threats to Thedas, apart from the people in it, is the Blight. Long ago, the Maker (the creator of the world) placed seven old gods, seven powerful dragons, in slumber deep under the earth, as punishment for tricking mortals into worshipping them. However, it's said that these old gods whispered to men in their dreams, teaching them the secrets of the Fade (the spirit world from which all magic comes), and leading them into a scheme through which they could take the Golden City, the seat of the Maker, for themselves.
While these seven magisters reached the Golden City, the Maker cursed them and cast them back down to the earth, where they became the first darkspawn. These darkspawn found one of the old gods, sleeping under the earth, and corrupted it with their taint, and the first Archdemon was born. Now, each time the darkspawn find one of the old gods, a new Blight begins.
Five Blights have passed now, with no sign of when the final two old gods will be found and corrupted. In the meantime, new threats emerge...
