Overview

In 2067 a vampire hunter heralded the beginning of the end. By publicly proving the existence of vampires he forced both the governments of mankind and the leadership of the undead to scramble for conflict. A conflict that doomed mankind, the vampires were able to recruit new combatants from captured civilians faster than their numbers died, and the older more experienced vampires turned out to be nigh impossible to kill with conventional military equipment.

Specialized anti-vampire kit was developed eventually; but by then it was too little to late, and by the turn of the century eighty percent of the world was under vampire control. That's when the nukes came out, bathing large swathes of vampire controlled territory in nuclear armageddon. Though this killed a substantial amount of vampires, including many elders; it also invited retaliation in kind. Most remnants of human government surrendered soon after.

It is now the 23rd century, and vampires rule the entire world. Isolated pockets of ineffective resistance remain, but they are unable to do much more than kill individual vampires and annoy the government. Mankind is for the most part treated like livestock, kept fed and housed in exchange for blood and cooperation. Resistance exists but is rare, punishments are harsh and success unlikely; while simply going along leads to a life of relative comfort and safety. A tiny minority of gifted humans are selected by vampires to serve as aspirants, candidates to be turned into vampires as soon as their sponsor acquires the right of progeny; to maintain the status quo, the ratio of vampires to humans is strictly controlled to ensure an abundance of available blood at all times.

Automation and AI research has progressed to the point that little manual labour is needed, and surveillance is similarly advanced allowing the vampiric global empire to keep a fairly tight leash on their society. Travel between continents, while restricted to most, is done using suborbital rocket flights that are far faster than any aircraft; while for medium distance travel magnetically propelled trains speed through vacuum tunnels.

Whenever the government locates a vine, a checkpoint is built around it to ensure native humans cannot leave and everyone else who passes through is subject to invasive security procedures. However, they do not know the location of all vines. For the time being, few vampires have ventured much beyond, preferring the comforts and safety of their homes over the adventure and danger of a world where vampires aren't treated as the natural masters. Some more adventurous vampires have left and explored, but for the most part the vampires are more keen to trade for offworld curiousities than to explore.
