Overview
Spira is recovering from a long time beaten down. For a thousand years a monstrous, nigh-unbeatable whale-like leviathan (leviathan, not Leviathan; this is an important distinction) referred to as Sin. This creature was created a thousand years earlier by the Maester of Zanarkand, a man named Yevon.
On the losing side of a war with Bevelle, then a technological wonder of the world, Yevon took the souls of those who had survived and created a dreamworld -- a perfect dream of Zanarkand before the tragedy -- and then created an "armor" for himself to guard it. This armor was Sin. Of course he lost control of it immediately, and it began to destroy the whole of Spira... starting with the remnants of Zanarkand.
A thousand years later, through many trials and tribulations, High Summoner Yuna, daughter of High Summoner Braska, brought an end to Sin permanently, bringing about Spira's "Eternal Calm" (the "Calm" being the name for the period of time between a Summoner's defeat of Sin and the monster's return).
However, even though the threat of Sin has passed, more threats loom on the horizon, these from within Spira. The Church of Yevon, once the highest... nay, ONLY authority in Spira, has been discredited -- the process of the Final Aeon that the Church built up as the ONLY solution to Sin was only a temporary stopgap measure, and it was revealed that most of the ruling Maesters of the Church were indeed Unsent (the spirits of the dead who either cannot or will not pass on).
With the belief and trust of the people at an all time low, the Church of Yevon seeks to reinforce its place in the hearts and minds of the people of Spira, rebranding themselves as "New Yevon". However, there are others who wish to take their place. Both the Machine Faction, a group of Al Bhed determined to dispel any lingering beliefs that machina (machines) are somehow evil as the teachings of the Church decreed, and the Youth League, a group of hot-headed rogues willing to do anything to secure ancient Spheres (magical recordings of Spira's past), seek to take power from New Yevon, and the inevitable clash promises not to be pretty.
Adding to that, it's rumored that there is an ancient weapon of the Machina War against Zanarkand a thousand years ago still around... a weapon so dangerous that using it against Sin was decided against. Should this weapon be found by the wrong person, it could destroy all of Spira. But... who truly is the "right" person to hold that kind of power. IS there a "right" person to hold such power?
