Overview

    Katanagatari takes place in what is essentially an alternate version of Edo era Japan. A different shogunate rose to power, basing their government in Owari rather than Edo. The changes are the results of interference by Shikizaki Kiki, the smith who produced the Deviant Blades. Ultimately, his efforts to change the future proved futile, and for the most part the flow of time went down its original flow anyway.

    The Deviant Blades are a set of twelve cursed weapons. Each one is a treasure that many would kill to possess, something that's enforced by the mental poison each one inflicts wielders with. Not only are people inspired to acquire them, but once someone has gained ownership they don't want to give it up.

    The main plot revolves around Shichika Yasuri and Togame's hunt for these blades, usually by killing their wielders and taking them.

    Katanagatari-1 diverges from it's source immediately after Nanami Yasuri acquires one of the Deviant Blades, Akuto Bita. With her missing with the blade, her brother's quest effectively became impossible. But given the nature of the world tree, it's entirely possible that someone may come hunting for Akuto Bita anyway.
