Overview

The world of Chrono Trigger exists across several time periods on a particular planet that is very much like Earth. In 600 A.D. The forces of Guardia Kingdom wage war with the Demon King's army, the supposed creator of Lavos. In a pre-historic past, tribes of early humans struggle against the far more technologically advanced and intelligent Reptites. Tales are told of the mythical ancient civilization of the Enlightened Ones who built their cities high in the skies, only to be destroyed somehow by some terrible force. Humanity prospers in 1999 A.D., before an earthquake and firestorm heralds the end... and the dark far-flung future of 2300 A.D., where the few remaining humans vie for scraps among the ruins, mutant creatures and killer robots roaming the landscape. All of these eras are connected somehow, by a series of events that spans hundreds and thousands of years, as if some mysterious force was trying to unite someone to stop them. It is a world of magic and monsters, with the seed of a terrible calamity sown deep, millions of years in it's past. Can humanity defy fate? Or will the future refuse to change?

The prehistoric era is 65 million years in the past of the Chrono Trigger setting. The geography is quite different from the present, as many world-changing disasters have not yet occurred. The land is arid with several large veins of freshwater running through it, as well as tall craggy mountains. It is here that the Iokan and Laruban tribes of early humans fight to stay alive against the intelligent and ferocious Dinomen, the Reptites--a reptilian humanoid species that existed before humans and are technologically advanced. The world is still a very wild place, populated by primitive mammallian beasts, dinosaurs and of course, cave people. The Tyrano Lair has recently been pulverized into a large crater at sea level by the fall of Lavos, and the land has begun to cool...
