Overview

Gaia is the third world in its solar system. It boasts a strong energy field made up of the life force of everything that lives or has ever lived on it. Long ago Gaia was settled by the Cetra, a race now mostly known as the Ancients. Though most if not all humans from Gaia boast extremely small amounts of Cetra ancestry, as a pureblooded race they are effectively extinct. The planet does boast at least one other race of nonhumans, possibly dating to before its settlement by the Cetra, but they too are bordering on extinction due to a centuries-long war with a rival tribe.

Human development on Gaia was at first dependent on Materia, crystallized pieces of Lifestream energy that allowed people to tap into abilities granted by the planet so that they could defend themselves from the often hostile wildlife. But as humanity progressed, it discovered technology, and one provider of technology rose up to dominate: Shinra Electric Power Company. Learning to harvest Lifestream energy, they dubbed it 'Mako' and treated it as any other natural resource, to be exploited. They developed wide uses for it, from powering machines to enhancing soldiers, and eventually in their hubris created a homonculus named Sephiroth utilizing the cells of the Great Calamity, Jenova. Once he discovered his origin, Sephiroth became obsessed with fulfilling Jenova's genocidal desires, and eventually even transcended death for the chance to end humanity. Though he was ultimately defeated, it was not without cost, as most major cities had been decimated.

In the wake of these events, a new terror arose: Geostigma. A disease said to be Gaia's own attempt to destroy humanity since Sephiroth had failed. In truth Geostigma was merely a symptom that the sickness of Jenova and Sephiroth still lurked within the lifestream, and their manifestations would have to be defeated once more before peace could finally be secured for a hurting, but wiser, human population.
