A modern-day Earth-like world with supernatural abilities hiding just under the surface. The Speedwagon Foundation tries to keep it all in check, but doesn't always succeed.
Type: BudMagic and sorcery do exist, but on a lower level. Most of it is alchemy, and requires either "equivalent exchange of energy" or some form of sacrifice. The use of these were at their height during WWII, when the Nazis were making grabs for ANYTHING that could give them an edge.
A dying art, with only a handful of practitioners still alive. Literally translated as "Ripple", this is an energy produced in the body via a particular means of breathing -- a method that was once taught amongst Tibetan monks. This energy is fundamentally opposite of the energy that sustains vampires, zombies, and other such undead, so it is useful against them. Through use of a martial art called "Sendo" (literally, "The Way of The Hermit/Wizard") this energy can be channeled offensively. Though Ripple energy can be used without Sendo training, via charging organic materials (hair, wood, etc.), or channeling it through some inorganic materials (metal conducts it like electricity). Ripple energy is incredibly versatile, and there are myriad ways of applying it, so techniques are rarely the same amongst different practitioners.
The appearances of Stands are as varied as their users, but ultimately what they all boil down to is they are the form that psionic phenomena take -- telekinesis, elemental "kinesis" abilities, telepathy, etc. Those who possess Stands are referred to as "Stand-users". A Stand's appearance and abilities tend to be determined by the psyche of the user. Stands can be categorized in several ways -- their range, their "type" (essentially their functions), and their overall power. Short-Range Stands (those that cannot appear more than 6 or so feet from their users) tend to be more physically powerful, while Long-Range Stands (those who can stray long distances from their users) tend to have lesser offensive capabilities in favor of greater support or utilitarian capabilities.
Robert Edward Orville Speedwagon, an ally of Jonathan Joestar in the 1880s, went to America following Jonathan's death. Through a dangerous trek, he managed to discover oil and began his own oil business, and through this he became one of the world's richest men. In his will, he decreed that all of his wealth would be used to create an organization that would concentrate on medical research and environmental conservation. As the supernatural elements became more prevalent, the Speedwagon Foundation began to invest in both supernatural research (to solve the problems) as well as a small military force (to assist in fighting the supernatural where possible). Currently the Speedwagon Foundation is the largest environmental protection agency in the world, with their supernatual knowledge and research "under the table", hidden from most of the population.
