Overview

It's the far future, and humanity has expanded into the stars. Problem is, the stars were already inhabited, and those inhabitants weren't too happy about a bunch of gun-toting yahoos muscling in on their territory. Thus began a war spanning twenty seven years, between humanity and a coalition of alien races called the Covenant.

The problem with this is that the aliens outnumbered and outgunned the human race, who barely held in there for the duration. The UNSC, short for United Nations Space Command, grew increasingly desperate and fielded multiple programs to hopefully turn the tide of the war. Chief among these was the heavily lauded Spartan-II program, which produced the most famous war hero of the future era: Master Chief John-117.

This is not his story.

The /other/ most prominent of the UNSC's projects was the Freelancer program, focusing less on creating one-man-army cyborg supersoldiers and more on the research and development of technologies that could be used by normal soldiers with minimal augmentation or special training. Taking stripped-down versions of various MJOLNIR armors utilized by the Spartan project, the Freelancers tested and innovated numerous unique field devices while doing odd jobs for the UNSC, hence the program's name.

In order to keep their skills sharp, the Freelancers practiced on Simulation Troopers between missions. These Sim Troopers were often military washouts or dishonorable discharges, soldiers the UNSC had no use for in the regular military and so "donated" to be used as living training dummies by the Freelancer program. Fed misinformation about a civil war between a "Red" army and "Blue" army, these Sim Troopers were kept in the dark about their true purpose and the state of the actual war raging on in the outer reaches of the galaxy.

However, the Freelancers were torn apart by internal strife and sabotage, in part due to crimes committed by the Director of the project. The Sim Troopers at the outpost known as Blood Gulch became known as galaxy-wide heroes for helping bring the Director to justice, as well as one of their number becoming an important ambassador to the Covenant, playing a large part in ending the war. These brave soldiers, having fought so hard to learn and expose the truth, certainly deserve rest, but lingering echoes of the Freelancer project and its enemies still haunt them...
