Overview

In the wilds beyond they speak your name with reverence and regret,
For none could tame our savage souls yet you the challenge met,
Under palest watch you taught, we changed, base instincts were redeemed,
A world you gave to bug and beast as they had never dreamed.

The Elegy of Hallownest enshrines the kingdom's praise for the Pale King, the ruler of a kingdom of bugs and beasts that exists in a large underground area, hidden away from the wild of the world above. When the king arrived the citizens of this realm lacked the intelligence and freedom of thought. Through his works, the previous deity of this kingdom was sealed away in a being known as The Hollow Knight.

Due to this sealing, the kingdom of Hallownest has entered into a time of prosperity for its people. People freely come and go from the central city into the outlying areas across the rest of the kingdom. The Pale King and his court reign from below in the Ancient Basin.

The people worry little thanks to the warriors that reside in each part of the kingdom. From armored knights and samurai mantids to wandering warriors and masters of the nail, all work to protect the people that can't defend themselves. The realm is made smaller thanks to the Stag Network. The network is a series of tunnels through which large six legged beetles can transport numerous people at one time with central stations known as Queen's Station and King's Station.

Secrets lay at the deepest reaches of this kingdom. The Pale King's research into the Void, if discovered, could be considered monstrous. The bugs of the Soul Sanctum research energy of the Soul, a power that manifests in a form of magic but can be dangerous if used improperly. The three dreamers that went into eternal rest to keep the entity sealed were considered some of the most important bugs to exist within Hallownest. Finally, what if the Hollow Knight itself was not perfect? The Pale King's creation was made to be devoid of thought and emotion so the previous god would have no presence to whisper to to seek it's release. If the Hollow Knight had emotion, and the creature sealed within could corrupt it, what would happen next...?
