Overview
Twenty minutes into the future, World War 3 has come and gone, and the world is once again at peace. Robotics have greatly progressed thanks to the Mecha Machen company, owned by the Frohlich family. Although they got their start manufacturing weapons for the war, Mecha Machen now provides more beneficial machines for public use. Among the most popular of these are animal-shaped battle robots, designed for nonlethal arena combat in televised tournaments such as the Robot Battle League.
Medical science has also progressed greatly, seeing advances in both cybernetic prosthetics and bio-augmentation. While the former has been able to flourish, however, the latter is illegal beyond cosmetic changes to the body, causing the rise of the criminal organization Alter. Originally founded with altruistic goals by Dr. Hardane, who sought to cure genetic disorders with research the law would not allow, Alter has attracted a number of criminal elements aiming to use Hardane's genetic engineering for much less humanitarian purposes.
Along with the threat of Alter, other criminals roam the streets of New York City, using illegal implants, gadgets, and sometimes even stolen military equipment to wreak havoc. The police are inadequately equipped to deal with the situation, often restricted to ineffectual stunguns and never enough budget or manpower to go around. In order to bring these scofflaws to justice, the mysterious Blitz (definitely not Steffi Frohlich, daughter of Mecha Machen's CEO) has arrived on the scene, using her trusty Kiwibot and taekwondo skills to clean up the streets! What's more, her example has inspired others to take matters into their own hands as well, joining the fight for justice!
Now that the Vines have connected this world with the World Tree, the public are only anticipating things to get worse. The police are still as restricted as ever, but access to outside resources means the criminals may end up becoming even more dangerous. Rewards may even be posted for heroic individuals to apprehend these new threats, though the native law enforcement may not be entirely grateful. As a note: Anyone who doesn't look human will likely be regarded with suspicion. Purely cosmetic modifications are legal, but openly displaying weapons or abilities the average human citizen wouldn't have will garner a lot of attention, probably negative, unless the proper channels are gone through.
Licenses can be applied for at the local police station without much difficulty, but can be revoked at any time should it be felt that the license holder is abusing their privilege. The exact laws regarding offworlders are still shaky and hastily applied, so it's typically left up to the personal judgment of officers on the scene. This is a terrible set up, and they are aware of it, but things just aren't getting simpler.
