Overview

All things must come to an end.

Even the universe itself.

In the exceedingly distant future, the Stellar Union no longer has any stars to its name. Once they had mastered the stars, controlled the location and creation of new stars, extracted all energy. But that time is gone. Hydrogen and helium, once the most abundant elements in the galaxy, are gone, and without them there can be no stars.

And yet, the Stellar Union limps on.

From its once nigh-unimaginable heights, its population remains but a fraction of what it once was. Though by the standards of shorter-lived beings, the end may still seem incredibly distant, nigh every remaining person alive is going to be there until the end.

A moneyless, stateless utopia. The diverse population is largely separated into modestly sized communes ranging from three thousand to ten thousand members. Each of which governs itself, and arranges for representation to negotiate anything that impacts more than its own commune. Most habitats are home to hundreds of such communes, and habitats for the purely digital citizenry can far exceed that.

Since all the systems which support the loosely connected Stellar Union are autonomous, there is no need for anyone to work unless they want to. The young, especially those prone to seeking purpose in a solved environment, tend to be more than enough to take on the tasks that still need doing.

Everyone else lives a life of pursuing whatever passions they have, creating a wealth of art, culture and discourse.

All of which doomed to fade into oblivion when entropy takes its inevitable toll.
