Overview
A thousand years ago, the God of Honorable War Tsurugi-no-Mikoto was brought low and usurped by the God of Treachery Ura. The newly risen God of Treacherous War withdrew his blessing from the country of Seiryu, and granted it instead to the then-small Kingdom of Emberwood. Its ambitious royal line of Zol began their 'Divine Crusade', a millennium of conquest; though the ruling Kaminagi clan of Seiryu fought valiantly, they were only able to forestall the inevitable rise of the Empire of Emberwood.
But after a thousand years of decline on the continent known as Sento-no-Moto, after Emberwood finally ended the Kaminagi, closed their grip on Seiryu and sealed their rule over the entire region, the last heir of the Kaminagi received the last vestige of power from the remnant of the now-Forgotten War God. With justice in her heart and war in her soul, she joined forces with the magitechnical Grand Duchy of Bran, and together they not only overturned the rule of Emberwood, they deposed the emperor Bian de Zol, and in a climactic battle that shook the very heavens, the last Kaminagi defeated and usurped Ura, and claimed her place as the new Goddess of Just War.
It has been ten years since Kaminagi-no-Tachi Kiri-no-Musume-no-Mikoto rose to the heavens, and the continent of Sento-no-Moto struggles to find its identity. The great Seiryuan diaspora is at an end, and the scattered people must decide whether to return to their homeland, or keep the lives they've built. The people of Emberwood, bereft of their emperor and their god, now struggle to find their own path forward, under the watchful eye of Archduchess Elsa von Bran. A great weight falls on her shoulders, as her oldest friend has stepped out of the mortal realm, leaving Bran the only real power on the continent.
There is a vast power vacuum, with countless towns and cities suddenly left to their own devices, remnants of the Emberwood military still seeking to reclaim lost glory, the snowy land of Seiryu trying to find itself anew after a thousand years of war and decline, and myriad bandits, would-be conquerors, and ambitious opportunists complicating every step of the way both socially and militarily. And on top of that, they must now find not just their own identity, but their place in a stramge, wider multiverse with magic and technology that may well exceed theirs. But for a time of tumult like this, in some ways the World Tree is just one more complication on the pile - and the people of Sento-no-Moto will welcome just about anyone with a strong sword arm and a friendly demeanor.
And of course, in all of this, Kaminagi-no-Tachi is not idle. Unknown to almost anyone, she has already chosen her first champion, a young woman with freedom in her heart and war in her soul.
