Overview

The world of Remnant is one with technology slightly above Earth's, with working prosthetics, humanoid robots, and many strange vehicles. A material called Dust allows for many of these things to be possible, giving almost magical manipulation of the elements. And somewhere, deep and hidden, true magic exists.

This world also has threats, as bestial Grimm, creatures with supernatural strength born of negative emotions, constantly assault humanity. It is an endless war in a harsh world.

Not everything is to be blamed on Grimm, either. Humans are humans, with good and evil inside them, and politics and war are both a threat even between the factions of humanity. Not to mention the faunus, humans with animal-like features, an oppressed minority for centuries that is only now gaining true recognition... often not fast enough for the more extremist of their number.

After becoming more connected with the World Tree, things have taken an expected turn. Many are very wary of anything strange, but some nations leap upon trade opportunities and try to put forth exchange programs. Meanwhile, the shadowy force behind the Grimm cautiously explores new options, hoping to find a new angle to approach obtaining its goals.
Dust

Dust is an elemental substance mined on the world of Remnant. It allows someone, properly-channeled, to create elemental effects or empower things with an element. Dust is a fuel and an enhancement, being used to power many devices in Remnant.

Technology

Most technology on Remnant is similar to late 20th or early 21st century Earth. Refrigerators, trains, and so on. Airships are common, but fightercraft less so, and worldwide communications are not as stable thanks to the threat of the Grimm. They do exist, but are often expensive.

Personal devices called Scrolls provide PDA-like functionality, and more advanced tech like robots and fully functional prosthetics exist. Spacecraft and satellites do not, which is one reason that making a reliable communications network is so difficult.

Faunus

A small percentage of the population on Remnant is not entirely human, but faunus. These people have a single animal feature, better night vision, and sometimes an animal-related talent like chameleon skin. They are a minority that has had difficulty integrating with most of the population for decades, and strife or prejudice between humans and faunus is common. This is becoming less common of late, but extremist elements still exist.

With the Blossoming of the world onto the World Tree, some faunus are urging for migration to more tolerant worlds. Ironically, the threat of even stranger beings has begun to make many of the humans of Remnant more tolerant of faunus, as they are at least natives of the world.

Grimm

Dangerous beasts called the Grimm roam Remnant. These creatures hate humanity(including faunus) and seek to destroy it, and are drawn to negative emotions like envy, hate, and sorrow. They resemble normal animals, but with a more combative twist, and some of them are much more fantastic and dangerous, resembling wolfmen or even more exotic beasts that would be mythical legends in other worlds, like the manticore. Some have unique skills, as older Grimm gain greater toughness and abilities. They tend to dissolve once beaten, making them difficult to study.

Hunters and Huntresses

Throughout the land, several schools train the best and brightest of their nations to be Hunters and Huntresses. These elite fighters are meant to protect humanity and the cities from the threat of the Grimm, and specialize in hunting them.

Hunters often have a changing weapon with multiple modes of attack, and highly-developed powers that are almost magical in nature, using the internal energies to create duplicates, super speed, sonic attacks, or other more subtle effects. They are highly skilled and capable of taking on multiple elite troops, but sworn to protect against the Grimm.
