Overview

In a land much like feudal Japan, in a world on the mend from untold disasters, the only law is that of the fist. Martial artists run unchecked, beloved by many for their spectacular fights yet despised by the working class for the damage they inflict upon their surroundings. Yet who can stop them? Certainly not the common man, and what few law enforcement agencies might exist are quickly overwhelmed by these powerful beings. It is a time of chaos, in a world long since ravaged by such conflicts.

In the midst of all this chaos, one peculiar being has emerged: An amnesiac woman named Aricelle, who travels in search of her origins. Unable to die, she appears to have been chosen by the gods for some purpose or another... but what? Is she to bring peace to this tumultuous world, or is there something else in store for her? Only one thing is for certain... She would much rather settle down and spend her days drowning in alcohol.

Magic: Primarily performed through verbal chants and rituals utilizing physical components, like brushes or small cauldrons. Magic is usually the domain of shrine maidens and other religious sorts, often dealing with summoning or banishing spirits, manipulating natural forces (i.e. causing a tree root to entangle a foe's foot), or conjuring items like unbreakable wire or bells that can blast enemies with directed soundwaves.

Mythological Creatures: Some Japanese mythological creatures exist, most notably the kitsune. Such beings are capable of magic without the need for rituals or spells, though they tend to be limited to illusions, shapeshifting, and small-scale transformation. Most of them are very reclusive beings, hiding from human society and only interacting with the outside world when they have need of a particular person. Fairies are also notable, as they tend to sell for a high price on the black market due to their life-giving abilities, used both by martial artists and as a power source for some androids.

Technology: Mainly very low-tech, what one might expect to find in feudal Japan. Some high-tech things like robots and androids exist, leftovers of a forgotten era, but they are exceedingly rare. People who understand how they work are even rarer.

French: Basically everyone has a French name, and speaks at least a little French along with their English. It's a thing.

The World Tree: Probably hasn't changed very much about this world, given how chaotic it is already. The common folk might have an easier time defending their homes at least, and martial artists can find challenging foes outside of their usual haunts. The typical response to outsiders will typically be neutral however, albeit with some commentary on the strangeness of dress or equipment. Characters from higher-tech themes with intact technology will stand out a lot and attract unsavory attention from those who wish to sell their stuff on the tech black market, but most commonfolk will try to go about their business as if nothing has changed.
